Traffic

Engineering Services closely monitors growth and traffic patterns. Several non-signalized intersections are studied on a yearly basis and road sections are monitored for traffic volume. This is to ensure that residents have, safe and efficient road networks, and that intersections are signalized where warranted.

Traffic Volumes
Traffic volumes are an important part of road improvements and future planning of Airdrie's road network. Engineering Services conducts approximately 40 volume studies a year; this information is used to monitor growth and traffic patterns.

Traffic Signals
Engineering Services monitors intersections and roadways to ensure traffic signals and pedestrian corridors are installed when required both by volume and feasibility. A warrant procedure is applied to determine the need for new traffic control devices such as traffic signals and pedestrian corridors.

Pedestrian Corridor
Airdrie has several pedestrian corridors marked with signs, over head signals and in-pavement lights. New signalized locations are selected based on yearly warrant studies. The pedestrian corridor warrant considers:

  • The number of pedestrians crossing the road and the number of vehicles that they must contend with
  • The type of road being crossed
  • The distance to adjacent protected crossings
  • The suitability of the location for this type of control

Truck Route
Airdrie's industrial park and access to surrounding highways produce a large volume of truck traffic. Public Works must be notified if an over dimensional load will be transported through city limits. An Over Dimensional Permit is required a minimum of 48 hours prior to move. This enables a Field Service operator to assist in traffic control and rotate traffic signals if needed.
