Signage

Election Signs

Election signs may be placed more than 14 days prior to the election date. This exception is for election signs only.

Accomodating temporary election signs supports a democratic election process. Election signs must be removed no later than 36 hours after the polls close.

Signs should be placed in areas so that they do not create a traffic hazard.

Portable signs
A portable sign is a sign that is mounted on a trailer or some other structure that allows the sign to be moved from site to site. The sign is used to display the announcement of special events, sales, or circumstances where a sign is needed for short specified time periods. Portable signs require a valid sign permit to be approved prior to placing the sign. Airdrie’s Land Use Bylaw regulates portable signs to ensure they do not become permanent as well as to limit the number of signs.

How do I apply?
A completed portable sign application includes:

  1. $40.00 application fee (this fee is waived for non-profit organizations, proof of non-profit status must be provided)
  2. Authorization from the land owner of the site where the portable sign will be placed
  3. Site plan showing the exact location of the sign  (maps are available on the City Web site)

Regulations

  • Not more than one portable sign may be placed at one site.
  • No more than five portable signs will be allowed in a portable sign corridor (see Land Use Bylaw).
  • Each portable sign permit issued is valid for a maximum of 30 days.
  • Once the permit has expired for a portable sign, re-application for another portable sign on the same site is not permitted until 30 days has elapsed from the expiration of the previously approved permit.
  • Permits for portable signs are not issued in locations where damage to municipal infrastructure may be caused.
  • Portable signs cannot exceed three metres in height and two metres in width inclusive of frame and support apparatus.
  • All parts of the sign, including electrical cords are prohibited from being placed on or overhanging on municipal property, unless permission has been granted from the City.
  • All signs must be located within the property lines of the location address shown on the sign permit.
  • The proposed advertising copy and/or business shall be indicated at time of permit application.
  • A portable sign is not allowed to be located or remain on a site without a sign permit, whether the sign displays advertising or not.
  • The sign must be placed so it does not obstruct the view of pedestrian or vehicular traffic.  If the sign is obstructing view, you will be asked to relocate the sign or remove it completely.
  • The words on the sign are not controlled, only the sign locations.

  • No more than two portable signs will be allowed in the west non-profit portable sign corridor and three portable signs will be allowed in the east non-profit portable sign corridor (see the Land Use Bylaw).
  • No period of vacancy is required for portable sign permits approved in non-profit portable sign corridors.
