Description:
The Municipal Planning Commission advises and assists Council in achieving an orderly, economical and beneficial development of land, and maintaining and improving the quality of the physical environment for human settlement within the municipality. The Commission makes recommendations to Council on the re-designation of land, land use bylaw amendments, the Municipal Development Plan and in some cases it is the subdivision and development approving authority for the City. The Municipal Planning Commission may provide input into special planning studies, development matters, transportation and engineering studies.
Term:
Members are appointed annually by resolution of Council at the Organizational Meeting. Effective January 1, 2007, the maximum number of consecutive years of service will be set at six (6) years. It is the intent of Council that 2007 will represent the first of six (6) years.
Meetings:
Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers. Meetings are usually 2 - 3 hours in length.

Issues Dealt with Over the Past Year:
These include new plans for Midtown, Bayside and Bayview, significant amendments to Residential Sections of the Land Use Bylaw, as well as informal educational sessions regarding residential design, sustainability and smart growth principles.
Issues for the Coming Year:
These include a review of the City's new Municipal Development Plan-AirdrieONE, proposed Intermunicipal Development Plan amendments, participation in the Annexation process with Rocky View County. As well, the Commission will deal with new developments in downtown Airdrie as well as some new residential development areas anticipated in Williamstown, Ravenswood and Prairie Springs. It is also expected that the administration will be dealing with further amendments to the Land Use Bylaw throughout the year.
