Design Standards

Design standards provides information regarding the standards governing subdivision design, servicing standards, design and construction approval processes and the as-built drawing submission requirements within the City of Airdrie.

Due to close proximity to Calgary, the City of Airdrie follows City of Calgary design standards. The City of Airdrie has adopted some standards separate from Calgary's design standards document which are listed here: Schedule "A". Any information included in Schedule "A" supersedes the effected design standards of the City of Calgary.

All Weather Access
In cases where asphalt access has not been completed, Engineering Services must approve sites as having all weather access and fire protection prior to the release of building permits.

Minimum requirements for all weather access include:

  • An engineered road base
  • Sidewalks, curb and gutter
  • Approved access points and turn-around room for emergency vehicles
  • An inspection by engineering services
  • All roadways must be maintained to the City of Airdrie’s satisfaction

Fire Protection requirements include:

  • All fire hydrants are installed and operational
  • A letter provided from the developer's representative stating all hydrants have been inspected and are functioning properly
  • Hydrants must be maintained as operational and will be checked regularly

In cases where all weather access has been provided but not maintained to the satisfaction of Engineering Services, building inspections will be halted until all issues are addressed.

Sound Fence
During the design process a sound attenuation analysis is required for any residential development bordering arterial roadways or highways. Sound fencing is required in areas where the noise analysis demonstrates a sound fence is required.

Sound Fence Requirements

Inspections

  • An inspection of piles prior to installation of rebar and concrete
  • A CCC/FAC will be required on any new sound fence

Line Assignment Standards
Engineering Services is responsible for reviewing line assignment applications prior to installation of shallow utilities. There is currently a nominal fee of $200 per line assignment.
