Road Construction Updates

New Railway Crossing
The City of Airdrie will begin construction on another point for vehicles and pedestrians to cross the railway tracks in Airdrie. Construction on the crossing, located on Railway Ave. will begin in 2012. View the map for the location of the new crossing.

24th Street between Yankee Valley Boulevard and Sagewood
Several concerns have been brought forward recently regarding this stretch of 24th Street.  City staff are aware of these concerns and would like to provide the following information:

Over the past few years, the volume of traffic utilizing this stretch of 24th Street has increased from 380 vehicles per day in 2004 to 3100 vehicles per day in 2011. The road upgrades were intended strictly to mitigate dust and to minimize the amount of maintenance required in comparison to an untreated gravel surface. Unfortunately the oil/gravel mixture, which provided an enhanced driving surface, had begun to fail this spring and was not expected to withstand another winter season. To extend the life of the oil/gravel mixture, repair work was completed this summer with the intention of maintaining the dust free, low maintenance surface not to improve the ride quality of the roadway. A 75% road ban has also been placed along this stretch of roadway to limit the heavy truck traffic.

Upgrading from rural to an urban roadway typically occurs as adjacent development proceeds, as can be seen on 24th Street adjacent to Sagewood, Fairways and Reunion. In this instance preliminary road design is currently underway and staff are looking at right of way requirements and budgetary implications of advancing this work.  Upon completion of this review, staff will be making a recommendation regarding this and other roadwork priorities, as part of the regular budgetary process.

Residents are reminded that although this stretch of roadway is posted at 60km/hr, it is an unimproved roadway and motorists may need to adjust their speeds according to the condition of the roadway.  The Public Works department will continue to monitor this roadway and provide general maintenance to surface failures and potholes as they appear.
