Red Cross Ice Safety

All skaters use the pond and creek areas at their own risk. The Parks Department checks the ice thickness once each week and only clears the ice when it is safe for them to do so (a minimum of 10" and weather permitting).

The City of Airdrie Parks Department floods outdoor rinks as soon as weather temperatures are around a constant 10 degrees below zero.

Three snow bank rinks:

  • Fletcher Park
  • Plainsmen Arena
  • Town and Country Centre Park

Four boarded rinks:

  • Bayside
  • East Lake Park (beside the Scout Hall)
  • Green space by Big Springs Cres SE
  • Plainsmen Arena

The City also clears skating surfaces on Nose Creek Pond, Summerhill and Waterstone.

The Parks Department maintains all the outdoor rinks on a daily basis, weather permitting. Nose Creek is maintained on a weekly basis.

Safe Skating on Outdoor Surfaces
All skaters do so at their own risk. The Parks Department checks the ice thickness once each week. Staff will tell you what the most recent test thickness is and you make your own informed decision. Remember to always skate with a partner and wear appropriate warm clothing.

Getting a rink in your neighbourhood
The first step to get a local community rink in your area is to get the support of your neighbours. The next step is to meet with the Parks Department. The proposal will then be presented to the Airdrie Regional Recreation Board for approval.

Please note residents in the area would be responsible for clearing snow off the ice surface and City Parks staff would flood the surface on a regular basis, weather permitting.

For further information, please contact the Parks Unit at (403) 948-8400.
