Weeds and Pests

The City of Airdrie has an Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM) model to decide why and how pesticides will be used in specific areas of Airdrie.

Benefits of the IPM plan:

  • Reduction of pesticide impacts on environment and human health through examination of alternative pest management tools.
  • Increased public awareness of Pest Management Program thereby alleviating public misconceptions.
  • Allows City staff clear direction of IPM policies as derived through public consultation.

Defining a Pest:

A pest is defined as “any injurious, noxious or troublesome insect, fungus, bacterial organism, virus, weed, rodent or other plant or animal pest and includes any injurious, noxious or troublesome organic function of a plant or animal.”

The majority of pests found amongst our parks are very common to this area of Southern Alberta. Although there are several pests challenging park maintenance operations, weeds account for the majority of the resources required for pest control.
