Snow and Ice Control

Public Works clears approximately 200 lane kilometers of streets in Airdrie. Streets are cleared based on a priority system to ensure the highest traffic roadways are addressed first.

First priority: Arterial roads(Main St, 8th Street, East Lake Blvd., and Yankee Valley Blvd)

Second priority: Collector roads (Meadowbrook Drive, Coopers Drive, and Woodside Drive)

Process:

  • Public Works staff monitor weather forecast 24 hours a day.
  • Before storms, crews apply anti-icing products to the roadway melting snow faster and reduces the chance ice will form and bond to the surface.
  • Plowing begins when snow has accumulated to 5cm (2.5") and when excessive drifting has occurred.
  • Product is applied to roads when they are plowed, with emphasis on intersections, corners, hills, school zones, playground zones and other known problem areas.

During the 2009/2010 winter season, Public Works snowplowed some local roads after higher priority roads had been plowed. Public Works will continue this for the 2010/2011 season.

Snow smart tips:

  1. To ease the flow of traffic and assist Public Works
Remove vehicles from the street by parking in driveway or yard, allowing the snow to be pushed as far to the curb as possible, creating the greatest width of travelable road.
  1. To minimize the snow deposited in front of your driveway
Shovel the snow to the right of driveway, reducing the amount deposited by the snowplow.
  1. Sidewalk clearing adjacent to property
Property owners and businesses are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk along frontages within 48 hours after the snow stops falling.
