June 20, 2025 / For Immediate Release
Airdrie, AB – New traffic signals at Towerlane and Elk Hill are expected to be operational by June 25 to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and prepare for the opening of Inspire.
These upgrades come ahead of a road reconstruction project on Main Street between Elk Hill and Erin Drive, scheduled to begin in early July. The project will include full asphalt removal and road rebuilding, intersection upgrades and improved pedestrian accessibility, including wheelchair-friendly enhancements at Elk Hill.
“We understand that residents may be frustrated to see Main Street under construction again,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “The previous Main Street construction north of Elk Hill was related to upgrades and life-cycle replacements of water, sanitary and stormwater pipes. This roadway reconstruction work is from Elk Hill south to Erin Drive and is to rehabilitate the roadway structure following a geotechnical evaluation completed in 2024. This project is necessary to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of one of our city’s arterial roadways.”
Once the new signal at Towerlane is activated, the mid-block pedestrian crossing near ATB will be removed and the landscaping and curbs in that area will be restored. While accessibility improvements are underway, the area will remain safe and navigable for pedestrians.
During the Main St. reconstruction one lane will be open in each direction throughout to ensure traffic flow.
The City reminds drivers and residents to watch for construction signage and drive cautiously through the work zone.
