Election forum exclusively for youth

October 1, 2013

Airdrie, AB – The Hyjinx Youth Council is hosting an election forum exclusively for Airdrie’s youth. The Airdrie municipal election is underway with 15 aldermanic candidates vying for potential votes. Mayor Peter Brown has been acclaimed. The Hyjinx Youth Council wants to ensure that young people under the age of 18 have a voice in this election, despite not being old enough to legally vote. The youth election forum will take place on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m., at the Boys & Girls Club of Airdrie, 200 East Lake Boulevard NE. The theme of the event is Vote Out Loud.

“We hosted a similar event for the 2010 election and got great feedback from our youth,” says Robbie White, City of Airdrie Community Developer. “The Hyjinx members have worked to make the forum very youth friendly to help encourage them to get involved by asking the candidates questions that are relevant to youth today.”

All members of the community are welcome to attend this event, but only those age 18 and under will be allowed to ask questions of the candidates. There will be a mix of pre-approved questions and questions from the floor.

The Hyjinx Youth Council members are enthusiastic about running this event, as they have been working together as a team to develop questions important to youth. Hyjinx Youth Council is a group of expressive young Airdrie citizens who seek to empower youth in Airdrie and act to bridge the communication gap between youth and the community.
