City of Airdrie to celebrate GIS Day

November 14, 2013

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie is participating in GIS Day on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 with a public event at City Hall from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This global event offers organizations the unique opportunity to highlight the uses of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and to showcase how the technology is being used as a decision-making tool in our community.

At this event, GIS staff will showcase a variety of projects they have been working on in the past few years. Visitors can participate in activities to win prizes and speak to GIS staff to learn about GIS in our community. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS.
