December 4, 2013, 9:30 a.m./ For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie is digging out after the blizzard that ended mid-day December 3, 2013. The following are updates on services as of 9:30 a.m. December 4, 2013.

Plan of attack today
We are focusing on providing single-lane pathways through communities to allow access and egress. Collector roads out of residential areas will be straight-bladed, when possible, to provide access to main roads. We have acquired additional contracted services to load and truck snow out of communities that have experienced excessive drifting and deep snow.

This morning, we are concentrating on the NW, W and SE and East Central areas of the city and outlying areas that have experienced the most drifting and excessive snow.

Priority 1 and 2 roads are under control and we are still working on school zones, finishing work started yesterday.

Calls to public works
We received over 1100 calls to Public Works for problem areas or help with snow-clearing. Please be patient as they work their way to your area.

Residents experiencing impassable roads can call Public Works at 403.948.8415 to have their street added to the list. Due to volume, we cannot return calls – residents should leave a message with their name and street address.

December 3, 2013, 4:30 p.m.

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie is continuing to manage the after-effects of a massive blizzard. The following are updates on services as of 4:30 p.m. December 3.

Snow Plowing
Snow clearing crews will be working through the evening to continue their efforts in getting the city moving again.

Because of the potential for school to resume tomorrow, crews will be concentrating on snow removal from school zones and will continue to work their way through residential main roads to allow access and egress to and from communities. Given the amount of drifting snow to contend with, this has proven to be a slow laborious process, so please be patient with our snow fighters.

With regards to windrows, the excessive amounts of snow are contributing to the larger than normal windrows created by our plow trucks. Regretably, there is no way to avoid these windrows as plows pass by driveways and side streets. Our initial focus is to clear a path along as many streets as possible to allow for access and egress to and from communities and this will continue for some time.  Residents can minimize windrows by ensuring they clear snow from their driveways and around their cars onto their lawns and not onto the road.

Genesis Place
All programs and activities at Genesis Place are cancelled for the day. This includes the pool area, the fitness centre, gymnasiums, classes, programs and food services. The building will remain open until 8 p.m. These cancellations and closures are necessary as the limited number of staff at the centre cannot safely maintain regular service levels. The arenas are operating as usual.

Airdrie Transit
ICE service will resume December 4. Please monitor @AirdrieTransit on Twitter or airdrie.ca in case of any changes to routing or schedules.

Local service will also resume on December 4. However, please anticipate detours on route and minor delays. Please dress appropriately for longer wait times and leave yourself extra time.

Waste and Recycling
The transfer station is expected to re-open tomorrow morning. Please monitor Airdrie.ca for confirmation.

Garbage collection is still ongoing today. Please continue to place your garbage out on your regular garbage day and trucks will do their best to pick it up, but be prepared for possible minor delays. Thank you to our garbage collection contractors for the great job trying to keep collection on schedule.

December 3, 2013, 2 p.m.

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie is experiencing the after-effects of a massive blizzard. The following are updates on services as of 2 p.m. December 3.

Snow Plowing
The City would like to send out a thank you to everyone who is pulling together to help get our city moving again. From neighbours helping to dig each other out to developers including Hopewell in Reunion, Mattamy in Windsong, Melcor in Kings Heights, Genesis in Bayside/Canals and Vesta in Williamstown who have put their own equipment into action to help dig out cars and clear streets. We appreciate our wonderful citizens and businesses pitching in during this extreme snow event.

Our snowfighters continue to clear priority 1 and 2 roads. Snow clearing equipment has also been deployed to each quadrant of the city to clear and remove snow where necessary from residential roads. Crews will be working their way through all neighbourhoods throughout the day. Please be patient as they work their way to your area.

Between City equipment and contracted services we have the following equipment on the roads: 4 Plow truck/Sanders, 5 Dump Truck Haulers, 3 Graders, 5 Loaders, 2 Backhoes and 1 small one-tonne Plow Truck.

Residents experiencing impassable roads can call Public Works at 403.948.8415 to have their street added to the list. Due to volume, we cannot return calls – residents should leave a message with their name and street address.

If you have a vehicle that is stuck in the middle of a roadway and you are able to safely go out today to try to shovel it out, please do so as cars blocking roadways are hindering our snow clearing team. We understand the challenges with this and kindly request if you are able to help move your car, we would appreciate it.
