December 31, 2013 residential house fire – AFD investigation details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The cause of the residential house fire which occurred at #219 Hillcrest Circle SW Airdrie on Tuesday, December 31 has been determined as an accidental incident.

The AFD Fire Investigator has determined the cause of the fire as combustible materials being left near or on a kitchen stove. The stove had been accidentally turned on, resulting in a low but hot smoldering fire occurring. Thick, heavy, black smoke from the fire quickly charged all levels of the home causing an estimated $200,000 damage to the interior and contents.

During the incident firefighters located and safely removed the owner’s pet cat from the second floor of the residence. There were no injuries to report.

The Airdrie Fire Department reminds the public of the importance of remaining attentive while in the kitchen and around cooking appliances. Ensure that all smoke alarms in the home are functioning properly and that you develop and practice your family home escape plan.
