Muriel Clayton students win Eco Youth Award
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – Mayor Peter Brown, along with Allison Beaudry from FortisAlberta, presented students from Muriel Clayton Middle School with the 2013 Eco Youth Award on January 21, 2014.
“The students at Muriel Clayton are a great example for all other students in Airdrie of ways we can make our schools more environmentally friendly,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “I sincerely congratulate the students and the teachers that got involved in such an amazing undertaking and I would like to acknowledge how proud I am of the initiative,” added Brown.
Over 60 students participated in implementing numerous environmental programs including vermicomposting, bringing bagless lunches on special days, adding plastics to their recycling routine and reducing the amount of paper created at their school.
“These awards are important to the City of Airdrie as they demonstrate our commitment to waste reduction through collaboration, public awareness campaigns, and citizen engagement,” says Shayne Hartin, Team Leader, Waste & Recycling Services.
Thanks to the award’s sponsor, FortisAlberta, the students will receive $500 to help keep these programs going at their school.
