January 31, 2013 residential explosion – AFD investigation details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Friday, January 31, 2014 at 22:24 hours (10:24 p.m.) the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a possible explosion occurring in a residence located at #1080 Kings Height Road SE.

On arrival fire crews reported that a violent explosion had occurred in one side of a two story residential duplex. Windows had been blown from the structure and smoke was showing from the main and second levels of the home. Two male victims, suffering from severe burns to large portions of their bodies were found by firefighters outside of the home. They were immediately transferred to AHS paramedics for treatment and transport to hospital.

Once inside the home firefighters found a small fire burning on the second floor which they quickly extinguished. Numerous interior walls had suffered significant damage due to extreme percussion from the explosion. Homes on either side of the fire scene were temporarily evacuated until the area was deemed safe.

The fire has been deemed suspicious in nature and remains under investigation by both the Airdrie Fire Prevention Bureau and the RCMP.

There were 5 pieces of apparatus and 14 firefighters on scene.
