July 8, 2014 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie and the Airdrie Board of Youth Affairs are pleased to announce the middle school and high school winners of the 2014 Mayor for a day challenge. Mackenzie Wood is the middle school winner and Breanne McPhee is the high school winner.

“Each year I am impressed and amazed at the creativity and enthusiasm of the youth that participate in the challenge,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “It’s always challenging to select the winners, and I’m thrilled that so many of our youth are interested in seeking ways to improve their community.”

Mackenzie submitted her ideas for an attainable housing plan and Breanne outlined her idea for a volunteer app that would connect volunteers to organizations in need. They each receive an iPad mini and are declared Mayor for a day.

Applications were shortlisted by the Airdrie Board of Youth Affairs, interviews were conducted by City Council members and members of the Airdrie Board of Youth Affairs and finally a recommendation was made to City Council, who made the final decision.

The judging panel rated the entries on a scale of one through 10 in the following criteria:
