August 6, 2014

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie’s population continues to grow, with the official 2014 census result at 54,891, a 10.76 per cent growth rate, compared to 8.42 per cent last year.

The City’s population grew by 5,331 or 15 new residents per day, versus 3,849 total or 11 new residents per day last year. “Growth continues to be significant in Airdrie,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “People move here as a lifestyle choice, enjoying our friendly community with great recreational and arts choices; our challenge is to continue to develop our community in a way that makes sense today and tomorrow to maintain our excellent lifestyle.”

1773 new homes were built by April 15, 2014 in Airdrie, an increase of 9.73 per cent for a total of 20,003 – this includes single family and multi-family residential options. Windsong, King’s Heights and the area between Main St and 8 St SW and 1 Ave NW and Railway Gate (this area near Sobeys is considered part of downtown) experienced the greatest growth.

In 2014, 58.84 per cent of residents completed the survey online, a significant increase from 2013 when 46.54 per cent of residents completed the survey online.

“By completing the census, residents help us to plan for the future,” says Sharon Pollyck, Manager of Legislative Services and Corporate Communications. “Accurate census numbers are used in determining grant levels from other orders of government and in our own community planning.”

Complete census findings will be posted online at www.airdrie.ca this fall.
