Tuesday, October 21, 2014 – Industrial Fire AFD response details
October 22, 2014/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA. On Tuesday, October 21 at 10:34 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded for the report of a possible industrial fire located at Rainbow Salvage, #104 East Lake Blvd SE.
On arrival crews found a large pile of scrap automobiles on fire in the yard behind the building and dark, black smoke covered the area.
Workers who were dismantling the cars with large equipment inadvertently struck a fuel tank which was then ignited by a spark.
Staff on scene initially tried to extinguish the blaze with dry chemical extinguishers but the fire quickly grew and spread, causing them to back away from the scene and call 911.
When fire crews arrived they established a sustained water supply and deluged the pile of approximately 400 cars with water and foam.
Once the initial fire attack had been completed a large track hoe was used to open the debris pile and assist with final extinguishment.
Crews remained on scene late into the morning to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.
There were no injuries to report. There are no damage estimates at this time.
Five pieces of apparatus and 13 firefighters were on scene.
