Three local school groups win 2014 Eco Youth Award

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Friday, February 27, the City of Airdrie presented three Airdrie school groups with a 2014 Eco Youth Award. Mayor Peter Brown, along with Merlin MacNaughton from FortisAlberta, were on hand to present the cash awards and certificates to the youth at their school.

“These students have shown great examples of ways we can make our schools and community more environmentally friendly,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “I sincerely congratulate the students and the teachers that got involved in these amazing undertakings.”

The 2014 Eco Youth Award winners are:

Ms. Hallworth’s Grade 2 class at Ralph McCall School
This Grade 2 class received $1000 for creating an outdoor learning area including benches and plant beds along with installing rain barrels and rock gardens to collect water.

The Eco Group at Ecole Edwards Elementary
The Eco Group has receive $250 toward their vermicomposting bin.

The grade seven Environmental Leadership class at C.W. Perry School
Who will also be putting $250 toward their vermicomposting bin.

“I want to thank each of the eight youth groups who submitted applications for these awards. Every one of your efforts in making our environment better are important and appreciated,” says Tracey Chala, Team Leader of Waste & Recycling Services. “And a heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsor of the 2014 Eco Youth Awards, ForitsAlberta, for making these awards possible.”

The Eco Youth Awards provide youth recognition for their efforts on a wide range of environmental stewardship initiatives and helps them implement or enhance projects and programs with an environmental focus.

“The Eco Youth Awards reinforce the importance of taking care of our environment and being respectful, responsible citizens,” says Mayor Peter Brown. “I think it’s terrific that we recognize these kids and promote stewardship within the community to look at different ways we can accomplish the same goal of sustainability.”
