Thursday, March 26, 2015 Structure fire - AFD response details
March 27, 2015 / For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, March 26 at 3:27 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a possible structure fire located in the #100 Block of East Lake Boulevard NE.
Fire crews arrived at the scene to find smoke showing from a medium sized, single story commercial building. Upon initial scene size up it was determined that a fire had occurred in the bay of a business which provided sand blasting and powder coating service.
Prior to the arrival of the fire department, employees had attempted to extinguish the blaze by using portable dry chemical extinguishers which were on site. Not able to completely extinguish the fire all employees had self-evacuated to the street.
Firefighters entered the building to find a small fire smoldering in a pile of particle board and insulation which was adjacent to a large commercial oven. They quickly extinguished any remaining fire and then used their thermal imaging camera (TIC) to determine if the blaze had extended. With no evidence of further extension they used fans to ventilate the area to clear any residual smoke and gases.
The cause of the fire and damage estimates remains under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
There were no injuries to report.
Five pieces of apparatus and fourteen firefighters were on scene.
