May 4, 2015 Bridge fire - AFD response details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Monday, May 4 at 6:17 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire located near Edwards Way and Railway Ave.

Upon arrival, crews found the south end of the bridge located in this area fully engulfed in flames. Heavy smoke was coming from the bridge decking material. There were no other structure in the immediate area in danger; however a small grass fire was also burning to the west as a result.

Firefighters contained the majority of the fire to the bridge structure and placed absorbent material in the adjacent creek to manage the spread of firefighting foam. Environmental experts were called to the scene to remove contaminants and remediate the water way.

The grass fire was contained to a small area and quickly extinguished.

There were no injuries to report.

The cause of the fire is remains under investigation.

Eight pieces of apparatus and fifteen firefighters were on scene.
