Pet Waste Pilot community chosen

June 8, 2015 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The votes are in! The communities who will be participating in the Pet Waste Pilot are in Monday’s collection day, which includes Prairie Springs, Luxstone, Coopers Crossing, Morningside, Hillcrest and Windsong.

“The Pet Waste Pilot is important to test the ability to accept pet waste in our organics program,” says Tracey Chala, Team Leader, Waste & Recycling. “Through the pilot, we will work with the organics processing facility to monitor the organics collected and use this information to determine if the program can be launched city-wide.”

Residents in the winning communities can place pet waste in their organics cart from June 15 - July 31. Although these communities will be receiving further details on the program, the general rule is all pet waste can be placed in a certified compostable bag, paper bag or loose in their green cart. It is extremely important that no kitty litter or plastic bags are put in the carts as they cannot be processed. The pilot will also accept shredded newspaper and wood shavings from small animals such as rabbits or hamsters.

A contest was held to determine which communities would participate in the pilot. Almost 900 people voted and Monday’s communities were the clear winner with 30 per cent of the votes. Wednesday’s collection communities came in second with 25 per cent of the votes.
