AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 2:13 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a fuel spill located on East Lake Road south of Veterans Boulevard NE. A passerby had contacted 911 to report that fuel had been spilled onto the roadway.
Once firefighters arrived they confirmed that an unknown amount of diesel fuel had been spilled and had entered the adjacent storm sewer system. City of Airdrie Public Works personnel were requested to attend the scene to provide information and support.
Workers immediately took action to contain any contaminates from entering into nearby East Lake. Once the spill was isolated in a catch basin located in the storm system, an external Emergency Spill Response Team arrived on scene to assist with the removal and disposal of what was determined to be approximately 50 litres of diesel fuel.
Cleaning and removal mitigation was required and completed on 550 metres of underground pipe and 400 metres of road surface. Operations took approximately three hours to complete. There were no negative impacts to the environment.
The direct cause of this fuel spill remains unknown as no vehicle could be found on scene at the time of the incident.
