Pet waste not accepted in green carts
October 9, 2015 / For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – Between June 15 and July 31, 2015, residents in select communities participated in a Pet Waste Pilot to determine if the City’s organics program could accommodate pet waste. During the pilot, the City gathered feedback from residents and the processing facility in order to determine the feasibility of moving forward with a city-wide program.
“Unfortunately, our processing contractor has determined that the process by which our material is composted cannot accommodate pet waste, with its increased risk of parasites,” says Kathleen Muretti Manager, Waste and Recycling Services. “They do not have the capability to segregate and treat this material in order to ensure the quality of the compost is maintained, and will not accept pet waste for processing.”
The City asks residents not to place pet waste (or cat litter) in their green cart.
The communities who participated in the Pet Waste Pilot included Prairie Springs, Luxstone, Coopers Crossing, Morningside, Hillcrest and Windsong.
