October 7 - 8, 2015 - Suspicious Fires - AFD Response Details
October 9, 2015/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The Airdrie Fire Department responded to numerous suspicious fires reported in the past 24 hours.
On Wednesday, October 7 at 7:33 p.m., crews responded to the report of alarms ringing at Chinook Winds Waterpark on Chinook Winds Drive SW.
Fire crews arrived at the scene to find smoke showing from a City-owned building which houses the washrooms and concession stand. Initial scene size-up determined that a fire had started in a washroom garbage container, filling the room with smoke while scorching an adjacent wall and ceiling area.
Firefighters were able to limit damage by quickly gaining access and extinguishing the blaze. Once the fire had been put out, crews had to open portions of the exposed ceiling and wall to check for possible fire extension.
Three other suspicious fires were then reported in the early hours of Thursday, October 8. At 4:54 a.m. fire crews responded to the report of small fires burning in the area of the #100 Block of Mackenzie Way SW.
On arrival, firefighters found a stack of burning newspapers and a fire in a garbage container located on the exterior of a large single story commercial strip-mall. These blazes were quickly controlled and extinguished before any significant damage could occur.
Fire crews were soon made aware of another fire burning in the area. Someone had started a fire in a newspaper distribution box located outside of the Sobeys grocery store. Prior to the arrival of the fire department, this blaze was extinguished by a Sobeys staff member with a portable fire extinguisher.
The cause of all of these fires and final damage estimates remain under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau. Fortunately there were no injuries to report due to any of these incidents.
