AFD Response - Fuel Spill, Dec 10
December 10, 2015
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 9:33 a.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a fuel spill located at 8th Street -1st Avenue NW.
On arrival fire crews confirmed that a passenger van, located in an adjacent parking, had lost approximately 100 litres of gasoline onto the ground. The fuel then made its way into the storm sewer system.
City of Airdrie Public Works personnel were requested to attend the scene to provide information and support services.
Actions were immediately taken by the Fire Department and Public Works to cordon off the area to vehicle traffic in order to support safe containment and removal of the spill before it could enter nearby Nose Creek.
Assisted by an external Emergency Spill Response Team, it took approximately six hours to fully and effectively mitigate the incident. Crews were tasked with cleaning and sanitizing approximately 300 meters of storm sewer pipes and catch basins.
The collaborative efforts of all agencies involved ensured that there were no negative impacts to the environment.
Direct cause of the fuel spill remains under investigation.
There were no injuries to report. Two pieces of apparatus and five firefighters were on scene.
