Four local groups win 2015 Eco Youth Award

January 28, 2015 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, January 28, the City of Airdrie presented four groups of youth in Airdrie with a 2015 Eco Youth Award. Mayor Peter Brown, along with representatives from the sponsor, FortisAlberta, were on hand to present the cash awards and certificates to the youth.

The 2015 winners are:

Gaming Den Project
Building Futures program
George MacDougall High School

Students are building an energy efficient gaming den space as part of their Building Futures program. They will receive $400 to help offset the cost of solar panels and building supplies.

Tower Garden Project
Jill Quirk’s Grade 5 class
Meadowbrook Middle School

Students have been working hard on sustainability programs including a sustainability fair, indoor plants and work on the community garden. They will receive $500 to purchase an indoor tower garden.

Organics Program
Mr. Turner’s Grade 4 class
Nose Creek Elementary School
Students currently have a small operation of collecting organics in their school. Instead of giving the students funds to implement their program, the City will award them $300.00 to go on a composting field trip.

Horticulture Project
Growing Futures Program
George MacDougall High School

Students are learning horticultural skills necessary to grow a variety of healthy herbs and vegetables from seed to harvest using hydroponics mediums- germination, re-potting, maintenance, and then sale of the plants. They work with the local food bank to supply fresh grown products and help offset the program by selling the products they grown in the spring. They are winning $300.00 to expand and advance their program to include landscaping.

“I want to thank each of the youth groups who submitted applications for these awards. Every one of your efforts in making our environment better are important and appreciated,” says Mara Pratt, Education Coordinator, Waste & Recycling Services. “And a heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsor of the 2015 Eco Youth Awards, ForitsAlberta, for making these awards possible.”

The Eco Youth Awards provide youth recognition for their efforts on a wide range of environmental stewardship initiatives and helps them implement or enhance projects and programs with an environmental focus.
