World renowned “City Doctor” to speak in Airdrie

April 28, 2016

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie and the Calgary Regional Partnership have partnered to bring Dr. Katherine Loflin, an international award-winning placemaking consultant, speaker and instructor to Airdrie to speak May 12 at the Inspiring Strong Communities Luncheon.

“Dr. Loflin has helped many cities through her research and her direct work with cities themselves,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “I’m very excited to hear her speak about how the attachment residents have to their city is related to the city’s economic resiliency, and how we can strengthen that bond.”

In her work as Principal of Loflin Consulting Solutions, Dr. Loflin has held advisory and leadership roles in some of the most groundbreaking and innovative Placemaking projects. She has assisted many cities in understanding the Placemaking framework; developing implementation strategies; beginning with small-scale, do-able improvements that can immediately bring benefits to places and residents alike.

“Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces and cities,” explained Leona Esau, Intergovernmental Liaison, City of Airdrie. “The idea is that we attach people to a community through the community’s assets, inspiration and potential, and through this attachment we create public spaces and cities that support our citizens’ health, happiness, and wellbeing.”

“There’s a body of research in understanding the power of place in our lives, and in the economics of a city,” said Dr. Loflin. “I look forward to this event as a way to be a part of changing the way the community views fundamental issues about community life and place. Your place affects every aspect of your life, and your relationship with place is a key factor in how well you live your best life.”

“I hope to see all of our community leaders at this event,” said Brown. “This is an excellent opportunity for Calgary, Airdrie and area entrepreneurs and business leaders, not-for-profit organizations, community leaders and those in the arts and cultural community to be inspired and energized by Dr. Loflin.”
