AFD Responds to Structure Explosion
July 19, 2016
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Monday, July 18, 2016 at 11:28 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of an explosion occurring in a detached garage located at the rear of a residence located on Springwood Crescent SE.
Fire crews arrived at the scene to find that two explosions had occurred in the interior of a large 26’X26’ garage. The blasts had blown the overhead door from its tracks and the east and west walls of the building suffered significant structural damage.
A male occupant of the residence was found inside the structure attempting to extinguish numerous small fires with a garden hose. Firefighters quickly evacuated him to the front street where he was assessed by Alberta Health Services. His injuries were deemed to be minor and he was not transported to hospital.
For safety of fire crews, ATCO Gas attended the scene to isolate the gas utility into the garage. Firefighters entered the structure to extinguish remaining hotspots before starting overhaul of the walls and ceilings checking for possible fire extension. To assist suppression efforts, fans were used to clear the area of heated gases and smoke.
The cause of the explosions and final damage estimates remain under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Four pieces of apparatus and 13 firefighters were on scene.
