November 12, 2016 Structure Fire
November 14, 2016/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Saturday, November 12 at 3:31 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a possible structure fire at Condillo Foods located in the 200 block of Eastlake Boulevard NE.
Fire crews arrived at the scene to find smoke showing from the roof area of the large commercial facility. All employees had safely evacuated to the street prior to the arrival of the fire department.
In order to deploy a large water supply hose from an adjacent fire hydrant, a portion of East Lake Boulevard was temporarily closed to traffic by the RCMP.
Construction crews, working on the roof at the time of the incident, met firefighters and informed them that a fire had occurred in the roofing material in an area under repair. Workers initially tried to manage the blaze with a portable fire extinguisher but were unable to extinguish it completely.
Firefighters gained access to the roof and used a combination of power saws and hand tools to fully expose the fire. Water and firefighting foam was then then applied to ensure the stubborn blaze was fully extinguished. Thermal imaging cameras were used to determine if the fire had extended anywhere else within the structure.
The exact cause of the fire and final damage estimates remain under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
There were no injuries to report. Six pieces of apparatus and seventeen firefighters were on scene.
