November 24, 2016 Suspicious Fire

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, November 24, 2016 at 8:04 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to report of a fire located behind the Dollarama store at 2781 Main Street South.

On arrival, fire crews found the contents of a large waste/ recycle bin fully involved in flames adjacent to the rear wall of a commercial strip mall. As a precaution, all staff and customers in the Dollarama store and surrounding businesses were temporarily evacuated.

Crews quickly brought the blaze under control. Firefighters entered each business of the mall to confirm that fire had not extended into the interior.

Once it was determined that no smoke or fire extension had occurred, air quality in the building was monitored. When the area was deemed safe, all affected stores were once again opened with the exception of the Dollarama which remained closed for the remainder of the day.

This fire has been deemed suspicious in nature with the direct cause remaining undetermined.

Damage has been estimated at $10,000.00

Four pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters attended the incident.

There were no injuries to report.
