Feb 20, AFD Water Rescue
February 21, 2017
On Monday, February 20, 2017 at 1:09 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to a water rescue incident located in the canals adjacent to the #1000 block of Bayside Drive SW.
On arrival fire crews were met by a member of the public who told them that they had witnessed two young boys fall through the ice and into the frigid water.
Firefighters, wearing ice rescue gear, quickly accessed one of the children and brought him safely to shore. Then they entered the water and successfully located the second child. He was immediately brought to shore where firefighters began life saving efforts.
Patient care was transferred to Alberta Health Services (AHS) as they arrived. One patient was transported to hospital by ground ambulance while the second and most seriously injured patient was transported by STARS air ambulance.
The Airdrie Fire Department would like to remind residents to be careful around all bodies of natural water, especially during times of dramatic weather changes. Please avoid these areas of water as ice conditions remain dangerous and unpredictable.
