May 11, 2017 Damaged natural gas line - AFD response details
May 12, 2017/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, May 11 at 11:43 a.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of an incident involving a damaged natural gas line located in the 500 Block of East Lake Boulevard.
Once crews arrived on scene they quickly determined a work crew digging a post hole had struck and ruptured a two inch natural gas supply line.
As a precaution, approximately 140 workers were evacuated from four adjacent businesses. In order to allow ATCO Gas emergency response crews to safely complete their work, Airdrie Municipal Enforcement officers cordoned off the immediate area to the public.
Firefighters established a water supply and stood by with charged lines until the flow of natural gas had been controlled. After approximately two hours of coordinated efforts the situation was brought under control.
Air quality readings were completed in the affected area and once deemed acceptable and safe all evacuees were contacted and informed they could return to their places of work.
There were no injuries to report.
Four pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.
