2018 Awards of Community Excellence announces winners

May 4, 2018 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, May 3, the City of Airdrie proudly presented the 2018 Awards of Community Excellence recipients in the following four categories: Leader of Tomorrow, Volunteer Advocate, Soul of Airdrie and Elite Athlete. Mayor Peter Brown was in attendance as host of the evening and proudly presented the awards to each recipient.

“This year’s nominees have all gone above and beyond in our community, which contributes to Airdrie’s sense of vibrancy and belonging,” says Mayor Brown. “Thank you to these exceptional nominees, along with the thousands of volunteers and athletes who continue to serve their community and have committed whole-heartedly to their passions.”

The winners are:

Leader of Tomorrow Award: Jaya Bansal
The Leader of Tomorrow Award is given to the Airdrie citizen between the ages of 11 and 18 who shows leadership through their volunteer involvement in school or the community.

Volunteer Advocate Award: Airdrie Parade and Fireworks Committee
The Volunteer Advocate Award if given to an Airdrie not-for-profit organization, a volunteer comprised of grassroots committee and/or a community group that has demonstrated community leadership by engaging citizens through volunteerism.

Soul of Airdrie Award: Sharon Uhrich
The Soul of Airdrie Award is given to an Airdrie citizen who has made an outstanding long-term contribution of at least five years to the City of Airdrie through their extraordinary commitments and efforts as a volunteer, demonstrating a passion for helping others and making a difference in their community.

Elite Athlete: Piper Fitzgerald and Danica MacDonald
The Elite Athlete Awards are presented to athletes who have obtained an exceptional level of athletic achievement in addition to having made significant contributions to the Airdrie community.

In early 2018, the City made the decision to combine its Volunteer of the Year awards and the Elite Athlete awards into one evening celebration. This exciting opportunity will provide our Elite Athletes with a larger event to showcase their level of excellence and significant achievements to many in the Airdrie community; our Volunteer of the Year Award recipients will also be recognized by a wider scope of individuals attending the event.
