June 3 Rural Structure Fire/ AFD Response Details
June 4, 2018/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On June 3, at 1:40 a.m. the Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire located south of the city on a vacant rural property adjacent to the community of Hillcrest.
When fire crews arrived on scene they found a large, single storey garage structure fully involved in flames.
With no immediate fire hydrants in the area, large Fire Water Tender apparatus from Airdrie, Crossfield and Rocky View County were used to shuttle water to the fire scene. To maintain safe access and staging for emergency vehicles RCMP temporarily cordoned off a portion of 8 Street to traffic.
Crews faced an additional threat due to a large 5000 litre propane cylinder which was in close proximity to the fire. The area around the tank was kept wet and cool to protect the vessel from the fire’s intense heat.
After approximately two hours, firefighters were able to control and extinguish the blaze. Crews remained on scene early into the morning to manage hot spots and ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.
There were no injuries to report.
The cause of the fire and total damage estimates remain under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Six pieces of apparatus and sixteen firefighters were on scene.
