2018 Official census results

July 4, 2018 / For Immediate Release

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – The City of Airdrie’s population continues to grow, with the official 2018 census result at 68,091, a 4.88 per cent growth rate, compared to 4.98 per cent last year.

The City’s population grew by 3,169 or 8.7 new residents per day, versus 3,080 or 8.4 new residents per day the previous year.

“Our population has almost doubled in the last decade. That kind of growth can be challenging to manage but we’ve been able to maintain the small town feel that attracts people to Airdrie,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “Despite a tough economy in recent years, I’m encouraged by our continued growth.”

Between April 2017 and April 2018, 971 new homes were added in Airdrie, an increase of four per cent for a total of 25,259. This includes single family and multi-family residential options with the communities of Hillcrest, Ravenswood and Bayside experiencing the greatest dwelling growth.

In 2018, a significant number of Airdrie residents provided their census information online. Online completion jumped up a record breaking 6.2 per cent in 2018 with 73.62 per cent of residents completing the survey online, an increase from 67.42 per cent in 2017.

“Our residents were very diligent in completing the census online and we are thrilled to surpass our target goal for online completion this year,” says Kari Kitiuk, Team Leader, Legislative Services. “With accurate census numbers we can maximize our grant dollar applications.”
