August 22, 2018/ Damaged Natural Gas Line/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Wednesday, August 22 at 3:48 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to a report of a damaged natural gas line in the area of Main Street and Centre Avenue.

When fire crews arrived at the scene they determined a contractor working on a water service replacement project struck and damaged an underground natural gas supply line while excavating with a large track hoe.

The immediate area was quickly cordoned off and all workers on site were evacuated.

An ATCO emergency response crew attended the scene to mitigate the flow of product from the damaged line and make necessary repairs. Firefighters remained on scene to support and ensure the safety of response workers.

Approximately 26 - 28 businesses in the area were temporarily without gas service until repairs could be completed.

There were no injuries to report.

Two pieces of apparatus and five firefighters were on scene.
