October 18 2018/Structure Fire/AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Thursday, Oct. 18 at 4:56 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a structure fire located in the 200 Block of Summerwood Place SE.

When fire crews arrived on scene they found neighbours with a garden hose battling a small blaze at the exterior rear of a residential duplex. Their quick actions prevented the blaze from breeching into the interior of the home.

The interior did suffer heavy smoke damage but a family of three, home at the time of the incident, were able to safely evacuate to the street. They have been temporarily displaced, but there are no injuries to report.

Firefighters extinguished what remained of the fire. They also opened up portions of the interior wall and ceiling and used their thermal imaging camera to check for possible fire extension.

The Fire Prevention Bureau has estimated damage to be $80,000.00 to the structure and contents. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Five pieces of apparatus and fourteen firefighters were on scene.

There were no working smoke alarms in the residence.

AFD reminds the public that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors must be installed, maintained and tested. Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors save lives.
