AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 at 1:58 a.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a structure fire located on Silver Springs Way NW.

A neighbour who was walking his dog noticed a fire burning on a wooden deck attached to the front of a single-story home. He quickly woke the sleeping family of three and contacted 911 for assistance.

Prior to AFD’s arrival, he used a portable extinguisher to bring the blaze under control to limit damage to the exterior of the residence.

When fire crews arrived they ensured that the fire was completely extinguished before using their Thermal Imaging Camera to confirm that the fire had not had extended into the interior of the home.

Preliminary damage is estimated to be approximately $15,000.

The Fire Prevention Bureau has determined the cause of the fire to be improper disposal of smoking material.

There were no injuries to report. Four pieces of apparatus and ten firefighters were deployed to the scene.

Public Reminder
The Airdrie Fire Department reminds the public that all smoking materials must be disposed of properly. They should never be placed into containers of plant material or thrown from windows of automobiles.
