April 1 Genesis Place incident response
April 1, 2019/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Monday, April 1, 2019 at 9:44 a.m., the Airdrie Fire Department responded to a reported odour complaint at the Genesis Place Recreation Center located at 800 East Lake Boulevard NE.
A customer using the pool notified staff of an unusual odour present in the area of the leisure pool and a 911 call was initiated. The pool deck and adjacent change rooms were temporarily evacuated and isolated until the cause of the odour could be determined.
AHS Paramedics initially assessed ten patients on scene complaining of minor respiratory irritation. Four patients (three children/ one adult) were later transported to hospital for further observation.
Fire crews worked closely with Genesis Place operations personnel to determine the possible cause of the odour release. A comprehensive assessment was completed of all pool’s mechanical and chemical systems.
Investigation efforts determined that a rare occurrence of a small pocket of air being released during routine pool operation caused an odour to occur. Water quality was not affected during the incident.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., the pool area was deemed safe and re-opened to the public.
Four pieces of apparatus and twelve firefighters were on scene.
