April 21, 2019/ Grass Fire/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On April 21, 2019 at 1:05 p.m., the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a grass fire in the area of the Airdrie BMX track located in Fletcher Park.

When fire crews arrived on scene they found smoke in the area and a fire burning in the grass near the BMX track adjacent to the railway tracks.

Firefighters accessed the fire scene with bush trucks and quickly extinguished the blaze before it could grow in size and threaten nearby structures.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be sparks from a saw, which workers were using to cut metal beams, igniting nearby dry grass.

There were no injuries to report.

Three pieces of apparatus and seven firefighters were on scene.

IMPORTANT PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE:
AFD reminds the public that conditions in parks and natural grasslands in and around our municipality are very dry. Caution is advised with activities that may pose a potential fire risk (i.e. backyard fire pits, disposing of smoking materials, etc.)
