City to install new water main and sanitary sewer pipe along Main St. this summer

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – This summer the City of Airdrie Water Services department will be installing new water main and sanitary sewer pipe along Main Street between Veterans Boulevard and Elk Hill. During this project sections of Main Street will be completely closed.

The water and sanitary sewer in these areas needs to be replaced because the current system is reaching the end of its life cycle. This project will prepare us for future growth and help ensure that our infrastructure does not fail at inopportune times.

“We understand closing Main Street will have a significant impact, especially to the business community,” says Glenn Archer Team Leader, Water Services. “However this approach will allow the project to be completed sooner and will be less expensive in the long run.”

The City held a business information session and visited each affected business in an effort to keep businesses informed.

The contract tender closed yesterday and the City is currently reviewing bids. Once a contract has been awarded for the work and the phased road closure schedule is confirmed, maps and detours will be posted on www.airdrie.ca/mainst

No water shut offs are expected for businesses or residents. Any disruption in sewer will be short-term and communicated at least 24 hours prior to the disruption.

Water Services has been in contact with emergency services to create emergency access plans for each phase of construction.
