AFD responds to report of smoke at residential complex
June 27, 2019 - For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Airdrie Fire Department responded to the report of the smell of smoke inside a large, four storey, multi-family residential complex located at #700 Willowbrook Road NW.
Prior to the arrival of the fire department, the building’s fire alarm system was activated and occupants had begun evacuating.
When fire crews entered the building they found a strong odour but no visible smoke or fire. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of all floors and the underground parkade area.
It was determined that a make-up air unit had over heated causing light smoke to enter ducting and the interior of the building.
The make-up unit was isolated until repairs could be completed.
Firefighters ventilated all floors of the building before completing air quality monitoring. After approximately two hours the area was deemed safe and residents were able to return to their homes.
There were no injuries to report.
Four pieces of fire apparatus and twelve firefighters were on scene.
