October 15, 2019/ Damaged Sprinkler System/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Tues., Oct. 15, 2019 at 6:20 a.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a fire alarm activation located at the Motel 6 on Gateway Drive NE.

When fire crews arrived on scene they found alarm bells ringing and large amounts of water flowing from a damaged sprinkler head in a room on the top floor of the four-storey motel.

Approximately ¼” of water pooled in the hallway and was freely flowing to the floors below. Prior to the building’s sprinkler system being taken offline, firefighters wedged the broken sprinkler head to limit the flow of water.

Water was found in numerous ceiling light fixtures on the lower floors and the building’s power was temporarily shut down. Guests staying in rooms which suffered water damage were relocated to other rooms within the hotel.

There were no injuries to report. Cause of the damage to the sprinkler system remains under investigation.

Four pieces of fire apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.
