October 22, 2019/ Hazardous Materials Incident/ AFD Response Details

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – On Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. the Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to the report of a possible hazardous materials incident in an apartment building located on Tower Lane Drive SW.

When emergency crews arrived on scene they found that the building’s fire alarm had been activated and residents were evacuating from the three-storey, multi-family, apartment complex.

Evacuated residents were coughing and complaining of an unknown irritant in the air of the 3rd floor hallway. Paramedics from Alberta Health Services were on scene to assist with evaluation and care of the displaced residents. No major injuries were reported.

Crews entered the building to complete interior air quality testing on all floors. Firefighters were quickly able to determine the substance causing the concern was similar to pepper spray which someone had discharged in the 3rd floor hallway.

Once the hazard had been isolated and controlled, firefighters initiated ventilation efforts to clear the air and return the building to a safe condition.

After approximately one hour, the area was deemed safe and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Five pieces of apparatus and thirteen firefighters were on scene.
