Reserve Land Agreement Reached
December 4, 2019/ For Immediate Release
AIRDRIE, ALBERTA– The City of Airdrie, Rocky View Schools, Calgary Catholic School Board and Conseil scolaire FrancoSud came together on December 4 to sign the newly completed Reserve Land Agreement.
“This Agreement is so important for long-term planning and allocation of school sites and adjacent joint use sites, says Mayor Peter Brown. “I am grateful to the administration team with the City and school boards for the collaboration that has brought us to this agreement and I look forward to working with them on future planning with this new shared vision.”
“As one of the fastest growing school boards in Alberta, Rocky View Schools is most pleased that new school sites will be allocated to school divisions in a timely manner and will be shovel ready for construction as the City expands,.” Says Board Chair Fiona Gilbert.
“The Airdrie Reserve Land Agreement is important because it provides a roadmap for our organizations to work together in the best interest of Airdrie’s citizens,” says Mary Martin, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Calgary Catholic School District. “We look forward to continued collaboration with our partners in Airdrie to create vibrant, new spaces for our students to learn and grow.”
Since fall 2014, all parties have been working together to develop a Reserve Land Agreement that enhances collaboration, improves predictability and increases land efficiency. This agreement takes into consideration all parties’ unique perspectives and provides opportunities for co-planning of school sites and future civic facilities. As part of this agreement, a formal Land Allocation Committee has been formed to provide a forum to discuss school and community planning issues and facilitate the regular exchange of related information.
Historically, the City has worked with school boards individually and on a development-by-development basis. With the growth of our city, the City and school boards agreed there needed to be a long-term, strategic way forward. The culmination of this cooperative work resulted in the Reserve Land Agreement.
