Pests and odours are seldom an issue with the kitchen catchers as the vented lids and smaller size are designed to keep odours to a minimum. However, if you have concerns, here are a few tips to minimize the potential for odors/pests:
- Empty your kitchen catcher often.
- Line your kitchen catcher with newspaper, paper bags or compostable bags.
- Wash the kitchen catcher periodically by hand or in the dishwasher (lid is removable).
- Sprinkle baking soda in your kitchen catcher.
- No liner
- Paper bags
- Compostable bags
Compostable bags are available at most major grocery and home hardware retailers in Airdrie. Biodegradable is not the same as compostable. If you choose to use a compostable bag, ensure it has one of these symbols:
The biggest contaminate to organic material is plastic bags. Never use a plastic bag to line your kitchen catcher or place any plastic into the green cart.
