Airdrie, ALBERTA – At the December 1, 2014 meeting, Council approved the 2015 Operating and Capital Budget. This year, Council used a new deliberation process for the 2015 budget. The Council Budget Committee replaced the Finance Advisory Committee in order to provide all Council members with an opportunity to deliberate the proposed budget.
The Council Budget Committee deliberated over five meetings to arrive at a recommended operating budget of $109,882,047 and a capital budget of $45,314,045. This means revenue generated from taxes will increase 4.77% or $1,974,780.
“Airdrie continues to grow and our services are growing to meet the demand,” said Mayor Peter Brown. In the 2015 budget, we have added new RCMP officers and firefighters, increased our reserves for extreme weather events, and we continue to build new roads and add transit services.”
2015 Budget Highlights
Community Safety – At a cost of $900,000, eight additional RCMP officers bring the total number of officers serving our community to 49. The officers are expected to start on April 1, 2015.
Snow plan -With $250,000 added to the snow maintenance reserve, we will increase capacity to deal with extreme weather events. The reserve will grow to $400,000 in 2015, aiming for a reserve of $1.3MM over the next few years.
Roads – At a cost of $10MM (funded through developer levies) a roadway at 40 Ave between Reynolds Gate and Main St will include a CPR grade separation and is part of the initial phase to create a partial interchange with the QEII.
Transit – At a cost of $3.5MM, the south transit park and ride will be completed in 2015.
Civic spaces – At a cost of $1.6MM, the design process for a new library will get underway in 2015. The 2016 capital budget includes construction costs of $16.5MM.
