The Downtown Plan Project

Downtown means many things to many people. What does it mean to you?
In early 2017, we asked community members to share different perspectives on downtown Airdrie through workshops, focus groups, an online survey and via emails.

Thank you to the amazing community members who shared their thoughts during these visioning events.


What did we learn from Downtown visioning?

The findings were presented to City Council on April 18, 2017. The Council report, workshop, focus group and survey results, and a report on the public engagement expenses provide details on the entire engagement process.

Through the visioning exercises participants provided thoughts on:
• The geographic boundaries of downtown
• The current state of downtown and vision for its future development
• The land uses and services people expect within downtown, including civic facilities
• The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the downtown


What's next?

Achieving the community’s vision requires the creation of a new Downtown Plan. Building on the visioning, the next step is to focus on the layout, scale and form of buildings, transportation and mobility, and overall pedestrian experience. Through a design charrette process, the project team will gather input from community members for a new Downtown Plan that will reflect the priorities of Airdrie residents and the City’s ten-year Economic Strategy for well-managed growth.

You are invited to attend the first Open House where residents will briefly review the results of the 2017 Downtown visioning, get an overview of the project timeline and process, provide input and feedback on downtown opportunities and aspirations, and sign up for participation in more interactive downtown planning activities this spring.

The first Open House will take place on Feb. 20, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 400 Main Street SE.
