Weed Like Your Feedback

The recreational use of cannabis will become legal in the summer of 2018.

Both the federal and provincial governments have decided what their respective legislative changes will be and now it is time to make decisions on how the sale and consumption of cannabis will be handled in Airdrie.

Like all municipalities, the City of Airdrie will be able to decide on:

  • Land Use/Zoning
  • Where cannabis can be consumed
  • Where retail locations can be located

On March 19th Airdrie City Council directed staff to complete public consultations with business owners and residents on each of these decisions.

Public Engagement Opportunities

  • Open House: May 9, 6-8pm, Council Chambers, City of Airdrie, 400 Main Street SE
  • Focus Groups: First two weeks of May
  • Airdrie Home & Lifestyle Show: April 28 - 29
  • Online & Telephone Survey: April 25 – May 6 (telephone portion starts April 30)

The City of Airdrie has contracted Banister Research Limited, a professional research company, to conduct a survey with residents and other interested stakeholders to gather input that will help shape future bylaws and practices regarding store locations, smoking and vaping of cannabis in public, considerations for business licensing and overall to understand future needs for information and municipal services. Results will help inform Council, although they will not be binding.

Next Steps
Feedback will be reported to Council in June. Changes to affected bylaws, Land Use and Smoking, will be presented to Council on July 3, 2018.
